Zammitti Orthodontics, reminding you June is National Smile Month!

We're halfway into June, but it's never too late for us at Charlotte's Zammitti Orthodontics to remind our patients that June is National Smile Month. Today, our team thought, would be an ideal time to remind our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our office.

Make sure you...

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. This helpful video shows you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss every day to thoroughly clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your treatment.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

On the Mecklenburg and Cabarrus county line. Serving Charlotte, along with surrounding areas of Concord, Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Kannapolis – Dr. Sal Zammitti is your orthodontic specialist, offering SureSmile, Invisalign and invisible braces for children, teens and adults.

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at 704.947.9991 at our convenient Concord location!

Ask Dr. Zammitti: Is oral piercing worth it?

Dr. Sal Zammitti and team know that piercing, like tattooing, is one of today’s popular forms of “body art” and self-expression. If you’re thinking about getting a piercing – or if you already have one or more – there are some health risks you should know about.

Your mouth contains millions of bacteria, and infection is a common complication of oral piercing. Just touching your mouth jewelry (tongue barbells and lip and cheek labrettes) can lead to infection. Many people who have piercings tend to regularly touch them – which is a perfect opportunity for bacteria from hands to enter piercing sites. Also, food particles that collect around piercing sites can lead to infection.

Pain and swelling are other possible side effects of piercing. Your tongue – the most popular piercing site in the mouth – could swell large enough to close off your airway! Piercing also can cause uncontrollable bleeding or nerve damage. Damage to the tongue’s blood vessels can cause serious blood loss.

At Zammitti Orthodontics, we want you to consider the potential pitfalls of piercing carefully before getting one. Keep in mind that it will be an added responsibility to your life, and will need regular upkeep. Make sure that you’re committed to the task of taking care of it for the full healing period and beyond.

If you have an oral piercing, we want you to pay special attention to it. Clean the piercing with antiseptic mouthwash after eating, and brush the jewelry when you brush your teeth. Of course, give us a call at 704.947.9991 if you have any questions.

Tell Dr. Zammitti and team: What should we blog about this summer?

As the summer rapidly approaches, our staff at Zammitti Orthodontics strive to continue writing about important topics related to braces and your treatment at our office.

To help us continue doing that through the course of the summer, however, we'd love your help: We thought we’d step back a bit today and ask you, our loyal readers: What would you like us to focus on our blog in the coming months? Perhaps there’s something you’ve wanted to ask Dr. Zammitti for a while? We're taking suggestions! Let us know by posting here or on our Facebook fan page!

The importance of dairy, from Zammitti Orthodontics

Dr. Sal Zammitti wants to know: is dairy a major part of your diet? If not, it should be! A 2008 study found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (also known as gum disease).

Our team at Zammitti Orthodontics will tell you that that gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected in studies to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Results of the study show that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Next time you reach for a quick snack, choose some cheese, or a glass of milk, and remember with each bite and every sip you're preserving your teeth for a lifetime of smiles!

For more information about keeping your teeth healthy, please give us a call at 704.947.9991.

SureSmile at work on CNN this week! From Dr. Sal Zammitti

You might remember Dr. Zammitti and team blogging about the advantage of SureSmile treatment awhile back. Well, today we thought we'd show you a clip of SureSmile being demonstrated on CNN this week!

In the clip, CNN's own Dr. Sanjay Gupta profiles Jessica Thompson, a teenager from Maryland who wasn't particularly thrilled about traditional braces, and chose SureSmile as her treatment. Jessica is not alone - more and more people are opting to go with SureSmile as their treatment option, and it's becoming quite popular with our patients.

With SureSmile treatment at Zammitti Orthodontics in Concord, getting braces sure isn’t what it used to be. Dr. Zammitti's patients get fantastic results in less time with this stunning technology - and typically spend less time in braces, need fewer office visits, experience less discomfort and achieve greater results than with traditional braces.

To learn more about SureSmile treatment at Zammitti Orthodontics, we invite you to give us a call at 704-947-9991.
